About Calculemus

The Calculemus team

"Calculemus" means Let us calculate. It's a phrase from Leibniz, who wanted to solve problems purely through computation. We're a team of computer science and AI students of Leiden University (LIACS) solving challenges of the current (scientific) community.

What we do

We focus on the mechanics of artificial intelligence, by participating all kinds of AI-related challenges. We like to puzzle and be creative. Our team consists of AI engineers, coordinators and team managers.

The Community

Studying AI is easier (and a lot more fun) when you aren't doing it alone. Calculemus acts as a place for students who want to build, debug, or research together. We run a few main events throughout the year:

  • Tech Talks: Technical deep dives by (LIACS) researchers and industry.
  • Hackathons: Short (and highly energized) sprints to build working models from scratch.
  • Game Nights: Low-key evenings where we bring laptops, grab pizza, and try to beat our self-made agents.

On top of that, we host interviews with current leaders and pioneers in the AI landscape. Feel free to reach out if you're having an interesting research-topic.

Whether you're a master's student training models for your thesis or a first-year who just wrote their first PyTorch training loop, you're welcome here. Check out our Events page to see when we're meeting next.
