About Calculemus
"Calculemus" means Let us calculate. It's a phrase from Leibniz, who wanted to solve problems purely through computation. We're a team of computer science and AI students at Leiden University (LIACS) trying to do exactly that with modern ML.
What we do
We focus on the mechanics of artificial intelligence, by participating in research driven challenges. We care about understanding architectures, optimizing them, and building systems that actually work in the real world.
The Community
Studying AI is easier (and a lot more fun) when you aren't doing it alone. Calculemus acts as a hub for students who want to build, debug, and research together. We run a few main events throughout the year:
- Tech Talks: Technical deep dives by LIACS researchers and industry engineers.
- Hackathons: 24-hour sprints to build working models from scratch.
- Coding Nights: Low-key evenings where we bring laptops, grab pizza, and write code together.

Whether you're a master's student training models for your thesis or a first-year who just wrote their first PyTorch training loop, you're welcome here. Check out our Events page to see when we're meeting next.
